This $908,881 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) will support research examining conceptions of Blackness among undergraduate Black STEM students. A collaborative network of six institutions across five states will conduct an exploratory mixed methods study integrating ethnography and survey design. The project aims to understand how Black students' notions of racial identity vary across dimensions like ethnicity, region, and generation, and relate to their STEM experiences and perspectives on racial equity. Products will include analytical tools, professional development materials, and infographics to inform more tailored STEM education policies and practices that facilitate increased and sustained access and engagement for Black undergraduates. Insights are intended to promote holistic, heterogeneous conceptions of racial equity benefiting all Black individuals. The lead awardee is North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, North Carolina.
