This $193,418 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems will fund research at Portland State University from September 2022 through August 2024. The research aims to improve green roof technologies by modeling species-specific impacts in the urban microclimate under the NSF's Engineering program (CFDA 47.041).
Specifically, the investigator will build on advances in plant modeling to accurately predict water use and ecosystem services of green roof scenarios as a function of vegetation type and environmental conditions. Modeling efforts will be informed by data collected from green roof monitoring sites, including an experiment at Portland State University. It is expected this work will result in modeling approaches for green roof cooling and runoff based on vegetation, climate conditions, and substrate depth. The combined data and models will be packaged for teaching engineering students through an online platform. Overall, this research seeks to advance understanding of vegetation impacts on green roofs to help formulate policy and evaluate appropriate incentives.
