The Center for Advanced Non-Ferrous Structural Alloys (CANFSA) at Iowa State University received a $154,103 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Industrial Innovation under the Engineering (47.041) federal grant program. CANFSA conducts pre-competitive research on non-ferrous metal alloys from lightweight magnesium to high-temperature refractory alloys. The Center investigates processing-microstructure-property-performance relationships using experimental and modeling techniques. It also trains students in non-ferrous physical metallurgy and supports faculty and curricula development. CANFSA research addresses challenges identified by university, government, and industry stakeholders in sectors such as aerospace, energy, defense, infrastructure, automotive, and biomedical. The award period is February 15, 2022 through January 31, 2027.
