This $200,000 National Science Foundation project grant supports the development of new diagnostic tools and combustion models for carbon-free fuels through the Engineering (CFDA 47.041) program. Funded from February 2022 through January 2024, the University of Texas at San Antonio will perform high-pressure absorption spectroscopy of ammonia combustion gases using an optical gas cell and shock tube. Thermodynamic models will predict absorbance spectra at temperatures and pressures relevant to detonation and supercritical combustion to enable novel quantitative measurements of intermediate species. Data collected will inform graduate and undergraduate engineering courses to prepare students for next-generation clean energy research. As a minority-serving institution near U.S. energy and aerospace industries, UTSA aims to build combustion research capabilities complementing its emerging aerospace curriculum with laboratory projects. Outcomes include new diagnostic methods and understanding of pollution formation at extreme conditions to accelerate carbon-free power development.
