The University of Illinois was awarded a $1.5 million Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences under the Engineering (47.041) federal grant program.
The four-year award will support the RECODE project to develop synergistic genetic and microenvironmental engineering platforms for directed liver organoid differentiation. The University will apply engineering approaches to generate functional liver organoids for downstream applications such as disease modeling, drug screening, and cell therapy. Through September 2025, the grantee aims to improve techniques for controlling liver organoid differentiation at the genetic and microenvironmental levels. Findings could enable more precise modeling of liver disorders and identification of therapeutic targets.
