This National Science Foundation project grant of $562,918 supports research at the University of Connecticut from October 2022 through September 2025 under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041). The research aims to develop novel computational techniques to efficiently design multi-functional lattice structures using triply periodic minimal surfaces for additive manufacturing. The techniques will take into account strength, durability, transport properties and manufacturability for applications in healthcare, water treatment and energy storage. Specifically, the research will formulate methods to design thickness-graded lattices meeting requirements, incorporate fatigue into lattice designs, and modulate unit cell geometry within a component for superior performance. The university will fabricate sample lattices, conduct analysis and testing to validate designs and inform limits imposed by the manufacturing process. If successful, the research has the potential to significantly increase the viability and applications of lightweight minimal-surface lattices in demanding fields.
