The University of Michigan was awarded a three-year $650,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Civil, Mechanical, and Manufacturing Innovation under the Engineering federal grant program (CFDA 47.041). The grant will support research exploring in situ nanoparticle synthesis and redistribution during solidification of metal matrix nanocomposites. Specifically, the University of Michigan will conduct experiments and analysis to better understand how nanoparticles form and move within metal alloys as they solidify after melting. Insights from this research could enable design of nanocomposites with optimized material properties for engineering applications. The grant period runs from September 1, 2021 through August 31, 2024, with the full $650k to be provided over this three year timeframe.
