The University of California Irvine received a three-year, $814,240 National Science Foundation project grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct research understanding the multi-year dynamics of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), including its El Niño and La Niña asymmetries and climate impacts from September 2021 through August 2024. As part of the Geosciences program's goal of expanding fundamental knowledge of the integrated Earth system through atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences support, the University will analyze ENSO's dynamics and variations between El Niño and La Niña events, as well as its influence on global and regional climates. Findings from this research could improve understanding and predictive capabilities for these important climate patterns.
