The University of Hawaii at Manoa received a $289,691 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences on July 1, 2021 to complete work by June 30, 2024.
The grant will fund the US GEOTRACES GP17-OCE AND GP17-ANT projects to map zinc speciation in the Southern Ocean overturning circulation and test the zinc scavenging hypothesis. As part of the NSF's Geosciences program (CFDA #47.050), which supports basic research in atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences to strengthen the national scientific enterprise, this work will expand understanding of integrated Earth system processes through mapping trace metal distributions and biogeochemical cycling in the Southern Ocean. The projects will deliver new data and insights into zinc speciation and its role in carbon sequestration through biological uptake in this climatically important region.
