The University of Washington was awarded a three-year, $137,893 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct collaborative research on the experimental and numerical study of bed shear stress and turbulent boundary layer structure induced by breaking-wave-generated vortices. The research funded through this award will strengthen understanding of integrated Earth system processes through basic research in atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences as outlined by the NSF Geosciences program. Specifically, the University of Washington will work with partners to examine the impact of vortices created by breaking waves on sediment transport and near-bed hydrodynamics through a combination of laboratory experiments and computational modeling from July 2021 through June 2024. Insights gained from this research could provide a more comprehensive understanding of coastal and marine sediment dynamics.
