The National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences awarded a $471,806 Project Grant to Princeton University from August 1, 2021 to July 31, 2024 under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The grant supports collaborative research to directly determine and model analyze the elemental stoichiometry of phytoplankton in the Oregon Coast. Princeton University will work with Oregon State University to obtain data on elemental stoichiometry and other plankton and environmental properties to develop, parameterize and test a regional ocean model constrained by the data. Professor Inomura of the University of Rhode Island serves as a subcontractor to develop a cellular model for incorporation into the regional model, mentor a graduate student collaborating across the institutions, and assist with dissemination and publication of results. The funding advances understanding of the integrated Earth system through basic research in ocean sciences.
