The University of Oregon was awarded a $227,229 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences to conduct collaborative research on volatile sources, eruption triggers, and magma ascent rates for mafic alkaline magmas at Nyamulagira and Nyirangongo volcanoes in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The research will be conducted under the NSF's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), which supports basic research in the atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences to strengthen the national scientific enterprise. Over a three-year period ending in April 2024, University of Oregon researchers will work to expand fundamental knowledge of integrated earth system processes through field and laboratory studies of the two volcanoes located in the East African Rift. The grant will fund analysis of volcanic gas compositions and fluxes, as well as monitoring of seismicity, deformation, and other geophysical parameters to better understand eruption triggers and magma migration rates.
