The National Science Foundation awarded a $465,659 Project Grant to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) for collaborative research titled "Predicting Riverbank Erosion in Thawing Permafrost" under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The three-year award beginning April 1, 2021 will support research to strengthen understanding of the integrated Earth system through basic research on atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences. Specifically, the funding will enable Caltech researchers to partner with other institutions to develop models for predicting erosion of riverbanks as permafrost soils seasonally thaw and melt in Arctic regions, helping to anticipate impacts on infrastructure and habitat from changing environmental conditions in the North.
