The University of Iowa received a three-year Project Grant award of $855,795 from the National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences. The award will fund the collaborative research project "Photochemical Silicon Aerosols: Establishing Atmospheric Sources and Significance" from February 1, 2021 through January 31, 2024.
The project aims to strengthen understanding of the integrated Earth system through basic research on atmospheric chemistry and aerosols, as outlined in the objectives of the NSF's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). Specifically, the University of Iowa will investigate atmospheric sources and impacts of photochemically-produced silicon-containing particles, to advance knowledge of silicon's role in atmospheric processes and climate forcing. The research findings could provide new insights into silicon cycling in the environment.
