Project Grant 20266704045668
- This three-year, $714,447 project grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310) will fund the development of RNA interference (RNAi)-based sprayable formulations and baits for insect pest management. The grantee, Kansas State University, will work to overcome major challenges to widespread application of small interfering RNA (siRNA) for insect pest control by...
- This $325,000 Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Crop Protection and Pest Management Competitive Grants Program (CFDA 10.329) will support research to develop innovative, sustainable strategies for managing the corn earworm and tobacco budworm pests in crops such as corn, cotton, and soybeans. The project will test two approaches to reduce pest populations - using drones to release beneficial insects as natural enemies, and disrupting pest...
- The University of Kentucky Research Foundation received a $180,000 Project Grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) CFDA program. The funding will support research to identify genes important for the structure and function of insect ovipositors, the body part used by female insects to lay eggs. The project takes advantage of genetic differences between two pine-feeding pest insects to uncover genes essential...
- This Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program provides $750,000 to the Regents of the University of California at Riverside to develop novel insecticidal proteins derived from insect-parasitic nematodes. The goal is to characterize these toxins and assess their efficacy in controlling insect pests in agricultural systems, either through transgenic crops or foliar application. This...
- This $180,000 federal Project Grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The funding supports research to investigate the sources of variation in breeding, mating behavior, and genetics across multiple populations of fruit-infesting fly species that are agricultural pests. The research aims to provide critical insights into the variability among...
- This $749,951 project grant was awarded on December 15, 2025 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The project aims to develop and evaluate genetically modified cotton plants with altered sterol profiles to control key cotton pests such as cotton bollworm, cotton aphid, and western tarnished plant bug, while also assessing impacts on a beneficial ladybird beetle. The key...
- This federal Project Grant award, totaling $587,749.00, was made by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The award will support research by Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) with the long-term goal of developing automated pest detection and surveillance capabilities for crops. The project aims to optimize low-cost samplers for...
- This Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Crop Protection and Pest Management (CPPM) Competitive Grants Program, CFDA 10.329, provides $199,157 to The Pennsylvania State University for a 2-year project to develop sustainable crop protection strategies using plant-derived bioactive compounds to manage the invasive fall armyworm pest in corn and sorghum. The project aims to study the effectiveness of bioactive compounds from cultivars of corn and...
- This $315,000 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Integrative Activities (IA) program supports research at Auburn University on the use of branched amphiphilic peptide capsules (BAPCs) for delivering double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) as a targeted biopesticide. The goal is to explore how variations in the size, charge, and composition of these BAPC nanomaterials can optimize the effectiveness, stability, and environmental safety of dsRNA-based pesticides. The project...
- This $220,346 federal Project Grant was awarded on July 1, 2024 by the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The grant was awarded to Kansas State University (KSU) to conduct research on the invasion pathways and associated microbial communities of the Khapra beetle and Larger Grain Borer, two major invasive insect pests threatening agricultural production in the U.S. The research aims to (1) determine the...
This $749,888 federal Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program aims to develop RNA interference (RNAi)-based pest management methods to control the fall armyworm (FAW) and other lepidopteran pests. The grant supports screening additional target genes to induce feeding inhibition and 100% larval mortality, as well as improving delivery of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) through nanoformulations and fungus-mediated approaches. The research will be conducted at the University of Kentucky Research Foundation, with plans to optimize the best dsRNA and delivery method through greenhouse trials and field testing, while also assessing non-target effects. This work builds on previous findings demonstrating 50-65% mortality of FAW larvae using dsRNA nanoformulations targeting the inhibitor of apoptosis gene. The grant has a performance period from March 1, 2026 to February 28, 2030.
