- The University of Illinois was awarded a $617,500 federal Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (AFRI program, CFDA #10.310) to develop and test a diagnostic testing technology that can rapidly detect animal diseases like Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, Foot-and-Mouth Disease, and Classical Swine Fever using a blood sample. This 3-year grant, with a performance period from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2027, will support the...
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded a $650,000 Project Grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program to Kansas State University (KSU) on September 1, 2024. The grant supports two main objectives: (1) developing an effective, DIVA-compatible (Differentiating Infected from Vaccinated Animals) classical swine fever (CSF) vaccine that can rapidly and strongly protect pigs against CSF disease, and (2)...
- This $591,481 federal Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310), supports research to develop mathematical models simulating African Swine Fever (ASF) disease dynamics across swine populations in three major U.S. production states. The key objectives are to: 1) develop multi-level models incorporating real swine population data, 2) investigate the feasibility of ASF control and...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Kansas State University received a $1.0M project grant from the Institute of Food Production and Sustainability under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) program, effective April 1, 2026 through March 31, 2031. This award supports research and education initiatives designed to enhance the adoption of optimized beef cow-calf production management systems across diverse grassland ecosystems in the United States. The project addresses the...
- This Project Grant award of $649,999.00 was provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The grant will support research at Kansas State University to study the pathogenesis and tissue tropism of Highly Pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus in agricultural animals over a 3-year period from April 2025 to April 2028. The AFRI program supports integrated research,...
- This Project Grant award of $649,943.00 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310) supports the development and updating of vaccines against influenza A virus of swine. The University of Nebraska is the primary awardee and will leverage its multidisciplinary expertise in agricultural research, technology innovation, and vaccine development to deliver this versatile, non-infectious vaccine platform. The project aims to...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary Kansas State University–Olathe (KSUO) received a $120,000 Project Grant award dated September 15, 2025, through the National Institute of Food and Agriculture's Cooperative Extension Service program (CFDA 10.500) to support the Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank (FARAD) initiative. The three-year award, with completion scheduled for September 14, 2028, funds KSUO's regional center operations as part of FARAD's 40+ year collaborative network to enhance food...
- Federal Grant Award Summary North Dakota State University received a $300,000 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310), effective September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2027. The project addresses critical challenges in swine vaccine development by rationally re-engineering porcine reproductive and respiratory disease syndrome virus (PRRSV) vaccine...
- The Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College (LSU) received a $800,000 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program. The three-year award runs from June 1, 2023 through May 31, 2026. Under the award, LSU will construct and test the protective efficacy of three versions of a novel pseudorabies virus quadrupled mutant virus...
- Federal Cooperative Agreement Summary Kansas State University received a $1,999,946 Cooperative Agreement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025), effective February 2, 2026, through February 1, 2029. The project will develop and validate an edible insect larvae-based vaccine against Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) for direct administration to...
Kansas State University received a $650,000 Project Grant from the Institute of Food Production and Sustainability under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) program, effective February 1, 2026 through January 31, 2029. The grant supports the development of a novel African Swine Fever (ASF) vaccine and companion diagnostic tools to address the significant threat posed by ASF to the U.S. swine industry. The project will identify protective antigen genes by comparing non-protective and protective strains of ASF virus, then develop a vaccine candidate combining a safe viral strain with protective antigens delivered via adeno-associated virus vectors. The research team will also investigate whether the vector-based antigen delivery alone can provide adequate protection. To enable differentiation of infected from vaccinated animals (DIVA), the project will produce two enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) capable of specifically detecting antibodies against wild-type ASF virus and vaccine components respectively. Upon successful completion, these deliverables are expected to significantly mitigate the global impact of ASF while positioning the United States as a world leader in ASF control and prevention. Research will be conducted at Kansas State University's facilities in Manhattan, Kansas.Federal Grant Award Summary
