This $800,000 project grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) supports the University of Pittsburgh, in collaboration with South Dakota State University, in developing critical solutions to address the growing threat of Influenza D virus (IDV) in cattle.
Specifically, the research team is:
- Developing new diagnostic tests to monitor IDV exposure in cattle and other livestock, and
- Designing an innovative nasal spray vaccine to protect cattle from IDV and prevent disease spread.
This proactive work will help safeguard the U.S. cattle industry, support its profitability, and strengthen the sustainability of U.S. livestock agriculture against the evolving IDV threat. The project began in March 2025 and is scheduled for completion by March 2028.
