This Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) CFDA 10.310 program will fund the "Agroecology Scholars Program in Research and Extension (ASPIRE) for Diversity REEU" at North Carolina State University. The $750,000 award will recruit and support 50 undergraduate students, with at least 50% women and 50% from underrepresented groups, to participate in a 10-week paid summer program focused on hands-on, cutting-edge agroecology and sustainable agriculture research, as well as professional development and career exploration in the agricultural field. The program consists of diverse farm and food system tours, faculty-mentored research training, tiered mentorship and networking, integrated extension activities, and professional skills development. This initiative aims to increase minority participation and technical competency in the agricultural workforce to address complex food system challenges and climate change adaptation.
