This federal Project Grant award of $649,999 from the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program will support research to develop methods for determining the value of pollination services by wild and managed pollinators, as well as efficient levels and locations of wild pollinator habitat preservation and managed pollinator stocking rates. The project, which will be carried out by the University of Maryland, College Park, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the University of North Texas, will draw on economic and ecological data to develop a conceptual framework for evaluating the impacts of landscape management and climate change mitigation strategies on pollination services. The researchers will use novel methods to identify land use practices, habitat quality, yield, and use of managed pollinators, and then conduct an integrated analysis to study how to set priorities for managing pollinator habitat across major agricultural production regions. This research aims to advance ecological approaches to agriculture that balance production and sustainable resource management.
