- The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $2,265,585 Project Grant to the Co-op Farm Irrigation Company under the WaterSMART (Sustain and Manage America's Resources for Tomorrow) program (CFDA 15.507). The funding will support the conversion of 20,800 feet of existing earthen and concrete-lined irrigation ditches to high-density polyethylene pipe. The piped system will include a flow meter, individual user meters, and a 15-horsepower pump. The project will also install an 11.8-kilowatt solar...
- Federal Grant Award Summary UC Riverside received a $591,500 Project Grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), CFDA 10.310, awarded January 1, 2026, with completion targeted for December 31, 2028. The project addresses water scarcity in California agriculture by developing on-farm solutions to enable safe use of recycled water (treated wastewater) for irrigating food crops. The research team will design and...
- This $15,000,000 Cooperative Agreement awarded by the Bureau of Reclamation under the SECURE Water Act - Research Agreements (CFDA 15.560) program supports a 5-year pilot project to assess the viability of installing solar panels over canals. The primary objectives are to reduce water evaporation, generate renewable energy, and build resilience to climate change by reducing carbon emissions associated with electricity generation. Key benefits may include increased water conservation during...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Clemson University's Division of Research received a $299,990 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), CFDA 10.310, awarded September 30, 2025, with completion anticipated by September 29, 2028. The award funds research to address low irrigation adoption rates among small and medium-sized farmers in the Southeastern United States by identifying...
- Grant Award Summary Iowa State University of Science and Technology received a $591,500 Project Grant award from the Institute of Food Production and Sustainability under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) effective February 1, 2026 through January 31, 2029. The project will develop and test an innovative lab-on-a-drone system designed to collect and analyze water samples from difficult-to-access agricultural locations, such as field drainage outlets and narrow...
** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** THROUGHOUT THE WESTERN U.S., IRRIGATION IS NECESSARY FOR PRODUCTION OF MOST CROPS. MANY SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED FARMS IN THE WEST ARE IRRIGATED USING WHEEL-LINE (WHEEL-MOVE OR SIDE-ROLL) SYSTEMS THAT ARE MORE LABOR-INTENSIVE THAN SYSTEMS COMMON ON LARGER FARMS. MANY CONTEMPORARY WHEEL-LINE SYSTEMS ARE SIMILAR TO THOSE USED HALF A CENTURY AGO. THE LONG-TERM GOAL OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS TO IDENTIFY AND QUANTIFY COST AND RESOURCE OPTIMIZATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR WHEEL-LINE IRRIGATION TO BENEFIT SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED FARMS. THIS WILL BE DONE BY INVESTIGATING THE BENEFITS AND COSTS OF MODERNIZING WHEEL-LINE SYSTEMS WITH LOWER PRESSURE (LOWER ENERGY REQUIREMENT) SPRINKLER TECHNOLOGIES; REMOTE-CONTROLLED, SOLAR-POWERED SYSTEM MOVERS; AND AUTOMATED SYSTEM SHUTOFF. THE STUDY WILL INCLUDE A COMBINATION OF SURVEYS, FIELD RESEARCH, AND SUBSEQUENT ECONOMIC ANALYSES. CURRENT AND POTENTIAL USERS OF SOLAR-POWERED REMOTE-CONTROLLED WHEEL-LINES WILL BE SURVEYED. FIELD RESEARCH WILL INCLUDE PERFORMANCE TESTING OF CONVENTIONAL AND MODERN SPRINKLER TECHNOLOGIES, FIELD STUDIES TO DETERMINE YIELD IMPACTS OF THE SPRINKLER TECHNOLOGIES, AND DOCUMENTATION OF LABOR BENEFITS OF MODERN SYSTEM MOVERS AND AUTOMATED SHUTOFF VALVES.THE INVESTIGATORS HYPOTHESIZE THAT THE MODERNIZATION WILL IMPROVE PROFIT, DECREASE LABOR REQUIREMENTS, DECREASE CARBON EMISSIONS, AND INCREASE CROP WATER USE EFFICIENCY FOR AN OVERALL NET MONETARY AND ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFIT. THIS WILL DIRECTLY IMPROVE THE SUSTAINABILITY OF SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED FARMS THAT RELY UPON WHEEL-LINE IRRIGATION AND THE COMMUNITIES THAT RELY UPON THESE FARMS. THEREFORE, THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS DIRECTLY RELEVANT TO THE AGRICULTURAL AND FOOD RESEARCH INITIATIVE AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS AND RURAL COMMUNITIES PRIORITY AREA AND THE SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED FARMS SUBPRIORITY AREA.
