** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** MISSISSIPPI AND ARKANSAS HAVE MANY SMALL FARMS RUN BY FARMERS WHO OFTEN GROW VEGETABLES LIKE TOMATOES, SWEET POTATOES, BELL PEPPERS, CUCUMBERS, AND WATERMELONS. THESE FARMERS FACE DIFFICULTIES DUE TO THE HOT AND HUMID SUMMERS THAT MAKE THEIR CROPS VULNERABLE TO PESTS AND DISEASES. IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR THEM TO QUICKLY AND ACCURATELY IDENTIFY DISEASES IN THEIR PLANTS SO THEY CAN PROTECT THEIR HARVEST. HOWEVER, THEY DON'T USE MOBILE DISEASE DETECTION TOOLS MUCH BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THEM AND THEY'RE HARD TO ACCESS. THIS LACK OF TECHNOLOGY PUTS THEIR FARMS AT RISK AND COULD HURT THE LOCAL AGRICULTURE AND ENVIRONMENT. TO TACKLE THESE PROBLEMS, THERE'S A PLAN TO INTRODUCE MOBILE DISEASE DETECTION TOOLS TO HELP FARMERS IDENTIFY DISEASES EARLY AND TAKE ACTION. THIS WILL IMPROVE SAFETY FOR CROPS AND ENCOURAGE BETTER MANAGEMENT OF PESTS. THE PROJECT ALSO WANTS TO TEACH FARMERS HOW TO USE THESE TOOLS THROUGH TRAINING SESSIONS, DEMONSTRATIONS, WORKSHOPS, AND EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS. IT'S ESPECIALLY FOCUSING ON HELPING FARMERS WHO HAVE FEWER RESOURCES AND ARE OFTEN OVERLOOKED. IF SUCCESSFUL, THIS PROJECT WILL NOT ONLY INCREASE INCOME FOR SMALL FARMERS BUT ALSO IMPROVE THEIR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT CROP PRODUCTION. ULTIMATELY, IT WILL STRENGTHEN THE AGRICULTURAL PROGRAMS AT ASU AND UAPB AND HELP MINORITY FARMERS IN RURAL AREAS.
