The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) was awarded a $1,500,000 project grant under the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Alaska Native-Serving and Native Hawaiian-Serving Institutions Education Grants program (CFDA 10.228). The "Drumbeats Alaska: Place-Based Solutions for Alaska Native Food & Energy Sovereignty (DRUMBEATS)" project aims to advance equitable, place-based Alaska Native food and energy sovereignty through culturally-responsive educational programs. The project will be implemented over 3 years, from September 2024 to September 2027.

The DRUMBEATS project partners with six Alaska Native-serving institutions to provide academic programming and community-based education focused on sustainable energy, ethnobotany, range management, tribal governance, food security, and traditional crafts. The project aims to increase Alaska Native student enrollment, graduation rates, and leadership in food and energy sovereignty efforts at local, regional, and statewide levels. Specific outcomes include expanded access to relevant coursework, experiential learning opportunities, and an Indigenous Food and Energy Scholars program to develop Alaska Native leaders in these critical fields.
