Oregon State University was awarded a $300,000 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Grants for Agricultural Research, Special Research Grants program (CFDA 10.200). The grant will support the development of sustainable land-based aquaculture systems for intensified production of commercially significant red seaweed in Oregon through June 2025. Specifically, the university will establish robust cultivars of Gracilaria pacifica and G. parvispora seaweeds, develop scalable processes to grow these strains on modular mesh panels, and test the panels in collaboration with industry partner Oregon Seaweed to assess productivity and product quality. Economic analyses will estimate costs to inform further technical improvements and cost reduction. Outreach efforts will also promote red seaweed aquaculture in the Pacific Northwest region. The goal is to establish land-based cultivation of commercially important red seaweeds as a viable agricultural enterprise in the United States.
