The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded a $617,463 Project Grant to Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, doing business as Virginia Tech, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) program. Over the next four years, this integrated project will conduct research on the use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for weed monitoring and developing standardized spray application parameters for corn and soybean crops. The project aims to explore new weed detection methods for site-specific herbicide applications and evaluate the economics of the proposed technologies. The research findings will be shared with industry partners to help improve the user-friendliness of UAS-based crop protection products. This project aligns with the AFRI program's priorities around developing and testing precision technologies, sensing and automation for crop management, and integrated resource conservation techniques for precision pest management.
