- The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) awarded a $939,127 Cooperative Agreement to the Division of Agriculture of the University of Arkansas. This 3-year project, running from September 30, 2023 to September 30, 2026, will document the environmental impacts of soil and water conservation practices on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and monitor edge-of-field practices. The work falls under CFDA 10.902 - Soil and Water Conservation, a program that...
- This federal Project Grant award of $400,000.00 from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (CFDA 47.075) program investigates the challenges faced by farmers in adapting to environmental change and climate change. The research project, titled "Equitable Pathways to Climate-Smart Agriculture: Rethinking Adaptation as a Continuum", examines how farmers' ability to adapt farming practices varies, and the long-term impacts of adaptation on the...
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) awarded a $553,179.00 Cooperative Agreement to the Division of Agriculture of the University of Arkansas on September 30, 2023. This 3-year project under the Soil and Water Conservation program (CFDA 10.902) will document the environmental impacts of conservation practices on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. The Division of Agriculture, a U.S. state government entity and 1862 Land Grant College,...
- This four-year, $1.6 million project grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will support research into the climate mitigation and adaptation potential of cover crops in Midwestern U.S. agroecosystems. Led by Indiana University, the project aims to examine social, environmental, and economic factors governing the adoption and effectiveness of cover crops as a natural climate solution through intensive field studies, remote sensing, producer interviews and...
- The Colorado Department of Agriculture was awarded a $24,999,998 project grant from the USDA Farm Service Agency Kansas City Commodity Office to expand markets for climate-smart beef and eleven cropping systems including corn and grains through the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities program. This program aims to increase adoption of Climate-Smart Agriculture and Forestry practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and sequester carbon. Under this award, the Colorado Department of...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) Project Grant award of $399,984 to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (UW-River Falls) seeks to study the cycling and transport of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in agricultural soils. The two-year project, titled "EMBRACE-EAR-GROWTH: Coupling In-Situ Probing and Modeling Moisture-Related Soil Carbon and Nitrogen Cycling and Transport", aims to: Decipher redox-related soil C and N cycling, mobilization,...
- This $100,000 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Integrative Activities program (CFDA 47.083) will fund planning activities for a potential future research proposal focused on reducing agriculture's carbon footprint in South Dakota. Over the one-year period from January to December 2023, the South Dakota Board of Regents will stage ten planning events across the state, including visits to partner universities and state agencies as well as workshops to engage potential...
** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** AS AN INTEGRAL COMPONENT OF ECOSYSTEMS, AGRICULTURE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO PROVIDE VARIOUS ECOSYSTEM SERVICES, INCLUDING CARBON SEQUESTRATION. CROP PRODUCTION REMOVES CARBON DIOXIDE FROM THE ATMOSPHERE TO BE STORED IN SOILS, BIOMASS, AND FINAL PRODUCTS. IN ADDITION, EMISSIONS OF GREENHOUSE GASES (GHG) FROM AGRICULTURE CAN BE REDUCED THROUGH IMPROVED MANAGEMENT OF FERTILIZER AND MANURE APPLICATION AND IMPROVED EFFICIENCY OF ON-FARM VEHICLES AND FUEL-BURNING EQUIPMENT.AFTER REJOINING THE PARIS AGREEMENT, PRESIDENT BIDEN SET A NEW TARGET OF REDUCING GHG EMISSIONS BY 50%--52% FROM THE 2005 LEVELS IN 2030. TO ASSESS THE POTENTIAL CONTRIBUTION FROM AGRICULTURE TO GHG EMISSIONS REDUCTION TARGETS, WE NEED ESTIMATES OF THE COSTS OF INCREASING CARBON SEQUESTRATION AND REDUCING ON-FARM GHG EMISSIONS THROUGH IMPLEMENTING CLIMATE-SMART AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES (CSAP).OUR RESEARCH PROPOSES TO FIRSTESTIMATE THE COSTS OF CSAP TO PROVIDE GHG MITIGATION AT A PARTICULAR LOCATION. WE WILL THEN ASSESS THE COSTSOF GHG MITIGATION THROUGH IMPLEMENTING CSAP BOTH REGIONALLY AND FOR THE UNITED STATES. USING THESE COSTS, WE WILL QUANTIFY THE COST SAVINGS FROM INCLUDING CSAP TO ACHIEVE A U.S. GHG EMISSIONS REDUCTION TARGET. WEWILL ALSO ESTIMATE THE POTENTIAL OF GHG MITIGATION TO INCREASES IN PAYMENTS FOR CSAP.THIS PROJECT FOCUSES ON THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN AGRICULTURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE DESIGN OF AGRICULTURAL CONSERVATION PROGRAMS. BROADLY SPEAKING, THROUGH ASSESSMENT OF THE COSTS FOR ADOPTING CONSERVATION PRACTICES, WE SEEK TO DEEPEN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROVISION OF ECOSYSTEM SERVICES ON AGRICULTURAL LANDS AND TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE DESIGN OF COST-EFFECTIVE AGRICULTURAL CONSERVATION PROGRAMS.
