The University of Delaware received a $749,428 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program (AFRI, CFDA No. 10.310). The grant will fund a research project to investigate how legacy dams have influenced the physical, chemical, and microbial properties of riparian soils upstream and downstream in the Chiques Creek Watershed in Pennsylvania. The university will monitor soil characteristics before and after the planned removal of a 2.4-meter tall mill dam in summer 2023, and at five other sites where dams were removed 5 to 100 years ago, to study short- and long-term trends. As part of the project, Stroud Water Research Center, Inc. will conduct microbial characterization, denitrification enzyme assays, and soil respiration incubations to analyze microbial structure and function at sampling locations.
