The University of Wisconsin-Madison will receive $849,916 under a four-year Project Grant from the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program (AFRI, CFDA No. 10.310). The university will conduct research to understand the impacts of fungicides on plant microbiomes in turfgrass and corn. Preliminary data showed a six-fold increase in disease in turfgrass after application of the broad-spectrum fungicide chlorothalonil compared to a non-treated control. The university will employ microbial community and metabolomic analysis to determine the molecular mechanisms behind dysbiosis of plant microbiomes and microbial processes following fungicide use. The research aims to identify fungicide chemistries that cause disease resurgence in turfgrass and corn, understand key microbial taxa and processes disrupted by chemical fungicides, and develop more effective biocontrol strategies to reduce synthetic fungicide reliance in agronomic and horticultural systems. Outcomes will provide insights to improve fungicide use practices.
