Washington State University will receive $603,000 through a three-year Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture to conduct research on developing novel, value-added specialty oils from mint plants. The award is provided through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program (AFRI; CFDA #10.310), which supports fundamental and applied research, extension, and education addressing food and agricultural sciences. Specifically, WSU will assess the substrate specificity of various enzyme classes involved in mint monoterpenoid biosynthesis, with the goal of enabling the breeding of new mint cultivars accumulating specialized essential oils with enhanced agronomic traits. The research has the potential to inform polyploid essential oil crop improvement more broadly. The period of performance is April 1, 2023 through March 31, 2026.
