The University of Minnesota was awarded a $736,819 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grants program. The grant will fund the creation of a Research Experiences for Undergraduates program that provides students the opportunity to conduct economic analyses using agricultural, food, and natural resource data from the University of Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station. Over the four-year period from 2022 to 2026, the program will offer technical and leadership skills training to undergraduate students in food, agriculture, or allied disciplines through an intensive internship that includes domestic and international study tours. Students will complete one international site visit, submit research for an undergraduate competition, and visit USDA laboratories. The program aims to develop a pathway for students into employment or graduate programs in the food and agricultural sectors.
