The University of Kansas Center for Research Inc. was awarded a $750,000 Project Grant from the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The four-year project will use the eastern Kansas River Basin as a case study to explore potential climate risks, adaptation strategies, environmental impacts, and socioeconomic consequences of a changing climate on the region's agricultural systems and rural communities. Key products and services will include developing improved regional climate projections; incorporating climate data into environmental models to identify effective land and water management strategies; and assessing how water resources and communities may respond under different climate and management scenarios. At least eight students, interns, and postdoctoral scholars will receive training. Teaching toolkits will also be created for K-12 teachers across Kansas. The work will help communities better manage current agricultural and water resources and prepare for potential future conditions.
