- Montana State University received a three-year, $176,186 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The grant will fund research into Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae, a bacterial pathogen of sheep that can cause respiratory disease, especially when co-occurring with other pathogens such as Mannheimia haemolytica. The university researchers will...
- This $300,000 federal Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) will support the development and testing of a novel vaccine against Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae, a bacterium that infects sheep and causes respiratory disease. The project aims to design a vaccine that incorporates biofilm components to induce a strong immune response in the respiratory tract and prevent or clear M....
- Montana State University will receive $681,422 under a five-year Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture to research honey bee antiviral defense mechanisms and develop biologically-based treatments to combat viral infections. The research directly addresses goals of the USDA's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grants program (CFDA #10.310) to understand pathogen impacts on pollinator health and mitigate...
- The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service awarded Montana State University a $218,768 cooperative agreement from March 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023 to support livestock research activities. Under the award, the university will provide feed and crop management services to support research conducted under the Agricultural Research Service's Agricultural Research Basic and Applied Research program (CFDA 10.001). This federal program aims to make agricultural discoveries and provide...
- Mississippi State University was awarded a $650,000 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The grant will fund research to develop a non-invasive diagnostic tool using near infrared spectroscopy to rapidly identify respiratory disease in livestock. The university will characterize the spectral and biochemical profiles in biofluids of animals exposed to...
- Montana State University received a $649,900 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The grant will fund research from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2027 to identify and validate novel loci resistant to wheat stem sawfly in hexaploid wheat, tetraploid durum wheat, and barley. The research aims to improve wheat stem sawfly resistance breeding in these...
- Montana State University was awarded a $177,674 Project Grant from the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The grant will support applied research and analysis of federal approaches to rural infrastructure investment through 2024. Specifically, the awardee will conduct a national policy analysis using expert interviews and compare three case studies of federally-subsidized...
- The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service awarded a $218,768 cooperative agreement to Montana State University from March 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023 to support feed and crop management activities for livestock research under the Agricultural Research Basic and Applied Research program (CFDA 10.001). As part of the award, the university will provide feed and crop management services to support the agency's livestock research efforts being conducted at its research facility in...
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded a $800,000 Project Grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program to Washington State University (WSU). The grant aims to develop a vaccine against anaplasmosis, a prevalent tick-borne infection in cattle that causes significant morbidity and an estimated $300 million in annual economic losses in the U.S. The project will test the protective capacity of outer membrane...
- This federal Cooperative Agreement award from the United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Plant and Animal Disease, Pest Control, and Animal Care program (CFDA 10.025) provides $168,000.00 in funding to Colorado State University (CSU) from August 15, 2024 to August 14, 2025. The primary goal of this project is to support implementation, monitoring, data collection, initial analysis, and reporting for the Sheep 2024, Bison 2022, and...
Montana State University was awarded a $644,000 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The three-year grant will fund research to better understand Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae, a bacterium that infects domestic sheep and can lead to asymptomatic colonization in adult sheep or severe pneumonia outbreaks in lambs and wild ruminants. Specifically, the university will work to define conditions associated with persistent asymptomatic M. ovipneumoniae colonization in domestic sheep, identify bacterial immune evasion strategies that promote persistence, and explore treatment strategies to eliminate persistent infection. Preventing clinical M. ovipneumoniae infections in lambs by eliminating carrier animals could significantly improve sheep health and production while also protecting bighorn sheep from devastating pneumonia outbreaks. The period of performance is January 1, 2022 through December 31, 2025.
