The University of Connecticut received a $500,000 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program.
The grant will support the training of a culturally and economically diverse cohort of undergraduate students in sustainable community food systems through courses, internships, and the development of an educational program for 3rd to 5th grade students. Specifically, the Sustainable Community Food System Fellows program aims to: 1) Educate undergraduate students on the complexities of food systems and provide summer internships; 2) Train fellows to create and deliver nutrition education to 4-H youth; and 3) Prepare fellows for food system leadership roles and entrepreneurship involving locally-produced food from rural and urban Connecticut. The goal is to develop the next generation of community food system leaders capable of holistic and equitable solutions.
