The University of Houston was awarded $500,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive federal grant program by the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture to launch a 15-week paid internship program called PATH (Providing Advanced Training in Health). The goal of the program is to recruit, retain, engage and train 50 undergraduate students from underrepresented Hispanic and African American backgrounds in entry-level community nutrition and health programming. Interns will gain experience in nutrition education, research, data gathering and evaluation to inform evidence-based practice. They will also receive mentoring and career development training. Key outcomes include recruiting and retaining at least 80% of students to complete a minimum of 80% of internship components, increasing participants' knowledge and skills, and fostering career readiness in community nutrition and health professions. The project period is May 1, 2021 through April 30, 2026.
