Oregon State University was awarded a $160,000 Project Grant from the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Rural Health and Safety Education Competitive Grants Program (CFDA 10.516). The grant will support expansion of existing rural health and safety education activities in Lake and Lincoln Counties in Oregon to address urgent needs related to mental health, substance use disorders, and COVID-19 response and recovery. Specifically, the grant will fund (1) implementation of evidence-based mental health and substance use disorder initiatives in Lake County, which is experiencing high rates of overdose deaths, suicidal thoughts, and suicides; (2) new COVID-19 response and recovery activities; and (3) new Spanish-language Mental Health First Aid trainings in Lincoln County led by the Juntos en Colaboración coalition. The project aims to reduce opioid misuse and improve mental health and well-being while also mitigating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Funded activities will be delivered from September 1, 2021 through August 31, 2023.
