Alabama A&M University (AAMU) received a $500,000 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) under the Scholarships for Students at 1890 Institutions federal grant program (CFDA 10.524). The July 2021 award will support AAMU's strategic project to recruit, retain and graduate students in agricultural and related sciences through July 2025.
The project addresses critical needs for increasing the number of graduates with baccalaureate degrees in food and agricultural sciences, and preparing graduates for the 21st century agricultural workforce. It will provide rigorous recruitment, retention support including student mentoring and academic counseling from AAMU teaching staff, admissions, career services and honors programs. Progress will be evaluated using formative and summative assessments and longitudinal tracking of graduates. The project aims to address financial barriers limiting retention of capable students from low-income communities in agricultural and natural resource sciences programs.
