The University of Florida was awarded a $243,500 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Higher Education National Needs Graduate Fellowship Grants program. The grant will support the development of a graduate education and research program focused on data science for soil health. A cohort of four Master's students and one PhD student will be recruited and enrolled in soil and water sciences, with a curriculum complemented by new courses in soil health and data analytics. Fellows will conduct team-based research under principal investigators with complementary expertise in data and soil sciences. An extension service program will equip fellows to create and disseminate outreach materials for diverse stakeholders. A mentoring program with individual development plans and peer learning opportunities will also be provided to support the fellows' professional growth and prepare them for careers addressing the targeted expertise shortage area of data science in soil-related disciplines.
