The Florida International University was awarded a $200,000 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Higher Education - Multicultural Scholars Grant Program (CFDA 10.220). The grant funds the Multicultural Scholars Program, which will recruit and train five undergraduate scholars from underrepresented minority communities. The scholars will receive training in big data applications in agriculture and natural resources science through research, internships, community engagement, leadership development, and experiential learning activities. Embedded curriculum modules will provide multidisciplinary training spanning sustainable agriculture, horticulture, soil sciences, integrated pest management, environmental sciences, conservation, renewable resources, and natural resource economics. Scholars will also gain experience applying big data in agricultural and environmental fields by working with USDA, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, and other partner institutions. The program aims to increase diversity in food and agriculture careers requiring multidisciplinary skills and perspectives.
