The University of Colorado Boulder's Police Department (CUPD) and Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence (CSPV) received a $1,999,939 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance under the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Education, Investigation and Prosecution Program (CFDA 16.040). The project aims to build and deliver a comprehensive approach to hate crimes prevention, intervention, and investigation for the University of Colorado system, including the Boulder, Colorado Springs, and Denver campuses. The key goals are to: 1) Educate students, faculty, staff, and community members across the CU system about hate crimes prevention and intervention through an evidence-informed public awareness campaign, and 2) Train campus officials, including law enforcement officers and administrators, on coordinated strategies for preventing, investigating, and addressing hate-based incidents and hate crimes in higher education. The project is expected to reach approximately 60,000 students, 23,000 faculty and staff, and 60 law enforcement officers, and will serve as a model for other colleges and universities nationwide.
