The City of Jacksonville, North Carolina will receive $1.3 million under a Project Grant award from the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance to deliver services as part of the Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and other Substances Use Program (COSSUP) from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2025.
The COSSUP award will support the 2022 Jacksonville NC COSSAP Project to expand existing efforts and develop new resources to respond to, treat, and support those impacted by opioid and substance abuse disorders in the city and Onslow County through seven key components. This includes redeveloping a quick response team, implementing peer navigators within emergency services, establishing a law assisted diversion program, convening an overdose fatality review team, providing child psychology services, placing a substance abuse counselor in schools, and conducting an evaluation led by researchers from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. The goal is to decrease overdose deaths by directing individuals to treatment services and supporting families experiencing substance use disorders.
