This $750,000 Economic Adjustment Assistance Project Grant from the Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration will fund the creation of an economic mitigation plan for key industries in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties, California that will be impacted by the closure of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. The Hourglass Project division of Reach, located in San Luis Obispo, will create an asset map of the regional economy, convene industry work groups across sectors such as agritech and renewable energy, and develop a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) to guide economic recovery and diversification. The EDA grant program aims to provide technical and planning assistance to regions facing adverse economic changes, such as the loss of the nuclear plant which currently employs over 1,000 workers and represents the largest private employer in San Luis Obispo County. The mitigation plan and CEDS developed through this award aim to strengthen the regional economy against the anticipated economic impacts of the planned 2024 power plant closure.
