The Spokane Tribe of Indians (STI) received a $345,541 Project Grant award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Geographic Programs - Columbia River Basin Restoration (CRBR) Program (CFDA 66.962). This 3-year project will build on the Tribe's existing contaminant monitoring work in the Upper Columbia River Basin. The project will expand the scope of sampling to include surface water, bottom sediments, suspended sediments, crayfish, and tree swallow eggs to better track the movement and trends of priority contaminants of concern over time. Key activities include collecting 30 samples each of water, bottom sediments, suspended sediments, and crayfish, as well as 90 tree swallow egg samples. The data generated will help evaluate the pathway of contaminants into the Columbia and Spokane River food webs and inform potential exposure to salmon and other fish. This project lays the groundwork for a long-term monitoring program in the region to benefit the Spokane Tribe and surrounding communities.
