The Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska received a $134,000 Project Grant award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Indian Environmental General Assistance Program (CFDA 66.926) to continue establishing and building capacity for their environmental program. The award supports the tribe's efforts to improve solid waste management through recycling and backhaul initiatives, conduct community outreach and education on environmental stewardship, and participate in climate surveillance activities through the Local Environmental Observer (LEO) Network. Additionally, the tribe will explore establishing a future water quality monitoring program and seek additional grant funding opportunities to further develop its environmental capabilities. No baseline data collection activities are planned for FY2025. This grant will enable the Qawalangin Tribe to enhance its environmental program administration and service delivery to the local community over the award period from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025.
