This $500,000 federal Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem-Solving (EJCPS) Cooperative Agreement Program will fund the Alaska Municipal League (AML) to conduct Health Impact Assessments (HIAs) and develop Climate Action and Resilience Plans (CARPs) for 25 disadvantaged coastal communities in Alaska. The project aims to evaluate the health impacts of climate change and natural disasters on these communities, and then create the basis for future resilience planning and federal funding access. Key activities include forming a municipal stakeholder advisory committee, community outreach, developing assessment and planning tools, providing technical assistance for resilience planning, and identifying potential state and federal investment opportunities. A sub-award to the University of Alaska Anchorage will support personnel costs for tasks like identifying data sources, reviewing the HIAs, and aiding in the local climate planning process. The expected outcomes include increased competitiveness for federal infrastructure funding, more planning tools for communities, progress on hazard mitigation plans, and enhanced environmental justice awareness among local government officials.
