The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded a $290,000 CERCLA Section 128(a) State and Tribal Response Program Grant to the Penobscot Indian Nation to enhance the tribe's brownfields response program. The primary objectives of this Project Grant are to: (1) establish or enhance the four statutory elements of an effective state or tribal response program, (2) maintain and update an annual public record of brownfields sites, and (3) conduct a limited number of site assessments or cleanups to help establish or enhance the tribal response program.

Through this funding, the Penobscot Indian Nation will perform activities such as surveying and inventorying brownfields sites, providing public involvement mechanisms, and overseeing the cleanup of two brownfields sites within the tribal land. The grant award will also enable the tribe to expand public education and outreach of its voluntary cleanup program, as well as assess two new brownfields sites through the State Targeted Brownfield Assessment Program. The project period for this EPA grant is from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025.
