The Environmental Protection Agency Region 1 awarded the Passamaquoddy Tribe a $160,000 Project Grant under the State and Tribal Response Program Grants (CFDA 66.817) program. The grant period is from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2023. Funds will support the Passamaquoddy Tribe's Brownfields Response Program to enhance its capacity to meet the requirements of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act Section 128(a). Key activities include conducting a timely survey and inventory of brownfield sites, which are properties complicated for redevelopment by hazardous substances; overseeing response actions to protect human health and the environment; providing meaningful public involvement; and approving and verifying cleanup plans. The Tribe aims to assist in remediating and reusing brownfield sites throughout Maine. No subawards are included in the assistance agreement. Outcomes will include expanding public education and outreach on the Tribe's voluntary cleanup program to small and disadvantaged communities, as well as assessing sites through the state's Targeted Brownfield Assessment Program and overseeing site cleanups.
