The U.S. Department of Education Office of Elementary and Secondary Education has awarded a $11,700,811 Rural and Low-Income Schools Formula Grant (CFDA 84.358) to the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The program is designed to address the unique needs of rural school districts that frequently lack the personnel and resources to compete for federal competitive grants and receive formula allocations too small to be effective. The funding enables eligible local education agencies (LEAs) to more effectively address local academic needs by providing greater flexibility in the use of limited federal resources. Through over 25 sub-awards to school districts across Texas, such as Winona ISD, Sinton ISD, Lamesa ISD, and Crystal City ISD, the grant program supports a range of educational services and initiatives targeting all students and teachers at eligible rural and low-income LEAs. These sub-awards have facilitated the provision of special education, migrant student assistance, teacher quality improvement, education technology integration, academic enrichment, career and technical training, and pandemic response services in the affected rural school districts.
