This federal Formula Grant award, provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Small and Underserved Communities Emerging Contaminants Grant Program (CFDA 66.442), provides $9,457,000 in funding to the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) to address emerging contaminants in drinking water. The grant will fund a range of projects and activities, including: planning and design of solutions to address emerging contaminants such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), manganese, legionella, and mycobacterium; sampling private wells for PFAS contamination; mitigation activities to address emerging contaminants (e.g. household point-of-use treatment); and training for water operators on PFAS sampling. The intended outcomes are to identify mitigation and remediation solutions, characterize the extent of PFAS contamination at private wells, enable household treatment of emerging contaminants, and train water operators - all with the goal of reducing PFAS and other emerging contaminants in drinking water and improving water system compliance with new regulatory requirements. The grant will provide assistance to small and disadvantaged communities across Nevada.
