This $1,857,000 Formula Grant awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Small and Underserved Communities Emerging Contaminants Grant Program (CFDA 66.442) will assist the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) in providing funding for five critical drinking water infrastructure projects in the underserved, small, and disadvantaged communities of Damascus, Hahira, Doerun, Lexington, and Bryomville, Georgia.
The grant will enable GEFA to construct new wells, chemical feed buildings, and treatment systems to remove various contaminants such as radionuclides, volatile organic compounds, haloacetic acids, iron, manganese, and coliform in order to help these communities comply with Safe Drinking Water Act regulations. The expected outcomes include reducing the number of non-compliant community water systems, ensuring clean and safe water, and building resilience and sustainability within the water systems to address challenges like droughts, population growth, and changing climate conditions.
