The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) awarded a $269,774 Cooperative Agreement grant (CFDA 93.847 - Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research) to The Washington University Office of Sponsored Research Services Division to conduct the "UNITED: UNDERSTANDING NEUROCOGNITIVE OUTCOMES IN TYPE 1 DIABETES: MODIFIABLE RISK AND PROTECTIVE FACTORS IN DIVERSE YOUTH" project. This longitudinal study aims to investigate early cognitive, functional, and structural effects in young patients with type 1 diabetes before complications occur, in order to identify modifiable risk and protective factors that influence neurodevelopment. The 5-year project will engage community stakeholders, collect data from a diverse cohort of children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes and their siblings, and provide a definitive view of the complex factors shaping neurodevelopment in this population to inform future interventions.
