The U.S. National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) awarded a $2,026,211 Cooperative Agreement (CFDA 93.121 - Oral Diseases and Disorders Research) to Baylor College of Medicine to evaluate the use of non-invasive self-collected samples for screening and monitoring human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal cancer.
The project aims to establish the test characteristics of novel biomarker assays, including circulating tumor-modified HPV DNA and HPV16 early antigen-specific antibodies, using self-collected oral rinse, saliva, and urine samples. It will also document the feasibility and acceptability of remote self-sampling in both an oropharyngeal cancer patient cohort and the general population. As part of the project, Arizona State University is receiving a $62,750 subaward to conduct HPV serology assays and coordinate sample/data transfer.
